Nosa Akenzua, Asaba The police in Delta state have arrested 21 suspected cultists in Ozoro and Okpanam communities. Recovered from the suspected cultists were six guns and 1, 000 rounds of ammunition. Acting Delta state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Chucks Orisewezie, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects to newsmen in Asaba, disclosed that police detectives acting on intelligence reports swooped on the suspects in their various hide outs.
He added that the suspects upon interrogation, confessed to be members of the dreaded Vikings Confraternity, a cult group that has been terrorizing the areas in the last one year. The police spokesman expressed worry that cultism has been on the increase in the state, but assured that the police was committed to eradicating of all forms of cult activities, including kidnappings, rituals and robbery. “The police is working very hard to ensure cultism and all forms of criminal activities are no longer in existence in the state.
The 21 suspected cultists will be charged to court on completion of investigations,” Orisewezie declared. In a related development, the state police command has rescued an Egyptian national abducted by suspected kidnappers in Okpanam community. According to the police, the Egyptian was lured to Asaba by a group of l kidnappers led by one Sunny (surname withheld) under the pretense of awarding him a contract in Nigeria, adding that the victim was held captive for over six months inside a building behind Vanguard office located at Okpanam.
While in captivity, the victim’s wife was forced to pay huge amount sums into an account belonging to one of the suspects, the police said, adding that the kidnappers were arrested following the alarm raised by the Egyptian which attracted the attention of passersby.
