The police in Kano have paraded 50 suspected political thugs arrested over alleged attacks on citizens during Sunday’s mega rally staged for the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, at the Sani Abacha stadium in Kano.
The command’s spokesman, DSP Haruna Abdullahi, who paraded the suspects, yesterday, at Bompai police headquarters, said the suspects were arrested with weapons during the campaign rally.
He said some of the suspects went berserk and started attacking innocent passersby, dispossessing them of their valuables including GSM phones and money.
“Fifty suspects were so far arrested while exhibits of weapons including knives, cutlasses, cudgels, sticks, swords, suck and dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and other intoxicating substances, and GSM phones were recovered from them,” he said.
He said investigation has since commenced into the unfortunate incident with a view to bringing the culprits to book, emphasising that the perpetrators and their sponsors would be fished out to face the law so as to serve as deterrent to others.
He therefore warned politicians to desist from encouraging thuggery during rallies and other political activities, stressing that the force would not fold its arms and watch as the laws of the land are being trampled upon with impunity.
